Joanna Dong, “Rose”

i’m sitting here in the rehearsal hall. i’m done for the day, and like all the ones before, it’s been a fruitful and satisfying day. one where i exercised all my faculties, one where my senses were stimulated, one where i knew where progress was made even when it’s not immediately visible.

the rest of the ensemble are still hard at work, going through the choreography for one of the big numbers i’m not involved in. i’ve got my eyes on the screen, but my ears pick up a soundscape i’ve come to be so familiar with… the stop-start of the rehearsal track playing on the audio system, instructions shouted out, tired voices singing with as much gusto as a dedicated performer could muster…occasionally interjected by a corny joke and hearty laughs… a witty insult, and more laughs.

i look up and i can’t help but smile. everyone is dressed in an assortment of rather unglamorous outfits – but comfort is always the order of the day if you’re spending hours and hours running about and sweating it out. yet… it is such a beautiful image.the concentration on their faces juxtaposed with the fatigue written all over their bodies, each pair of eyes bright with life, every individual the physical manifestation of beautiful personalities.

i am so very fond of these people. the sincerity, generosity, humility and brilliant sense of humour is an extension of the immense amount of talent and depth of life experience they each embody.

i’ve met my share of great people, but rarely this many of them in one space.i tell people i’ve been really busy with work these days – but the truth is, i’ve been busy being happy.
