Months of preparation are finally coming together this Thursday, culminating into a much-awaited 26-shows performance in Drama Centre. Behind everyone’s fatigue is a shell-shock expression, ‘let the show begin!’.

The actors and actresses appear rather calm and remain highly professional in the string of media dialogues taking place before the show opens. Round table dialogue by Zaobao, one-to-one-interview by Straits Times Life!, video recording by Razor TV, appearance on prime time show Good Morning Singapore, humming familiar xinyao songs on air Radio 1003 are now part and parcel of daily life between snatches of sleep and nights of fine tuning in rehearsals. And our very own Practice Cat is published in the Straits Times next to Sing Chew, who plays the lingering singing spirit.

The production team led by two formidable skinny lasses and a prop making skinny lad has started the move into Drama Centre on Sunday just as ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ crew moves out. Sets, lighting, sound system would be fine-tuned and any snags resolved before the actors/actresses and musicians move into position.

More than 10 schools would be attending our performances despite the advisory and as a result, artfund funding withdrawn. Resourceful teachers who believe firmly in the necessity of arts education (beyond dancing bunnies) have sought alternate sources of funding. The draw of a previously sold-out Singapore Chinese Musical strung together by xinyao has silenced the hug.

Art has prevailed!

Let the show begin.

Since its launch on the 6th of March, ‘If There’re Seasons…’ soundtrack has claimed a notable fifth position on Popular’s CDRama ranking. An inaugural effort by both Theatre Practice and Warner Music Singapore, Mr. James Kang (Marketing Director of Warner Music Singapore) takes time off his busy schedule to speak to us …

Q. Why did Warner decide to partner with The Theatre Practice to produce this soundtrack?
A:The advent to produce the soundtrack to the most anticipated Chinese musical of the year blends the commercial market experience of Warner Music with the artistic essence of Theatre Practice. The result is an extraordinary product that is unique on both fronts – to the recording Industry as well as the theatre scene. The casting of Warner Music Recording Artiste Shi Xin Hui in a key role in the musical is also a key factor in bringing us together.

Q. Is this your first time producing a soundtrack for a theatre production? How does it differ from the production of other albums?
A. Yes it is. The production of a soundtrack is not just about replicating the theatre experience audio-wise, but also to ‘flesh out’ the characters in the songs in accordance to their show personalities. Precision in timing and tempo in recording is also essential as a huge cast is involved, and every aspect of their contribution is crucial.

Q. Tell us more about the process of producing/marketing & distribution a soundtrack.
A: A soundtrack is inevitably linked to the source – in this case, a well-established play. This is something the audience wants to bring back home as part of the holistic theatre experience. Awareness and word of mouth are both extremely important in the marketing of this product. The challenge is in the marketing of this soundtrack outside of the core audience of theatergoers, though I believe that the recordings will resonate well with the local audiences. The music and the lyrics of xinyao have an impact on our collective memory, and have exerted considerable influence on the local musical culture of today. Of course, we do hope that the promotion of the soundtrack on-air would drive listeners to watch the play.
